How to feed Vitalbix Pure Timothy
Pure Timothy is a fine-textured forage product that can be used in various ways. For example, it is ideal for horses that need a little extra support if they are too thin or underweight. It can also serve as a (partial) replacement for forage for horses with dental problems.
Furthermore, Pure Timothy is a great addition to any diet, for example, to provide extra fibre if a horse is not getting enough roughage. As it is dust-free, it is also a good choice for horses sensitive to dust.
And, of course, you can simply feed Pure Timothy as a healthy and tasty treat or as a reward during groundwork.
Feeding advice per day
For extra support:
150–400 grams per 100 kg body weight.
For example, a 500-kilo horse should be given 750 grams to 2 kilos per day.
As a partial replacement for roughage:
100–400 grams per 100 kg body weight.
For example, a 500 kg horse should be fed 500–2,000 grams per day.
As a healthy treat or tasty supplement:
30–150 grams per 100 kg body weight.
For example, a 500-kilo horse should be given 150–750 grams of Pure Timothy per day.
One Vitalbix measuring cup contains approximately 300 grams of Vitalbix Pure Timothy. To measure out the correct amount, use the ‘Daily Complete’ mark on the measuring cup as a guide. A standard 1-litre feed scoop contains approximately 1.1 kg of Vitalbix Pure Timothy.
Easy to feed dry or soaked
Vitalbix Pure Timothy can be fed either dry or soaked. Feeding it dry is handy when you simply want to provide a little extra support. Feeding it soaked, on the other hand, is ideal when your horse needs extra moisture or has difficulty chewing dry feed.
Want to feed it soaked? Simply mix Pure Timothy with water. If using lukewarm water, the pellets should soak for about 10–15 minutes. With cold water, this takes about 20–25 minutes. Stir well and check that all the pellets have broken up to form a nice, mushy consistency.
FAQ
-
Firstly, it’s worth noting that these are all supplementary roughage products. However, Pure Timothy is pressed into pellets, whilst Fiber-Mix+ and Pure Lucerne consist of pure fibre. It therefore also depends on what your horse prefers.
For example, do you have a horse with dental problems? In that case, it’s best to choose Pure Timothy, as you can easily feed it soaked.
Please feel free to ask for advice if you’re not quite sure which to choose.
-
Thanks to its fine texture, Timothy+ is easily digestible, even for horses with poor dentition. The product can also be easily soaked, making it highly suitable for horses with severe dental problems.
If you mix it with lukewarm water, it should be left to soak for approx. 10–15 minutes. If you mix it with cold water, leave it to soak for approx. 20–25 minutes. Always stir it thoroughly and check that the pellets have completely broken up and a nice, mushy consistency has formed.

Vitalbix Pure Timothy has a pellet diameter of just 6 mm. We have deliberately chosen this smaller size so that the pellets can also be fed dry. If a horse does not chew a pellet properly and swallows it whole, a 6 mm pellet can usually slide down the oesophagus more easily with the help of saliva than a larger pellet.
A 12 mm pellet is more likely to get stuck in the oesophagus and must therefore always be fed soaked. By choosing a 6 mm pellet, we minimise this risk and ensure that Pure Timothy can be fed both dry and soaked.
Feeding dry also has the advantage that you can easily provide a little more energy with a smaller volume. Feeding soaked, on the other hand, can be beneficial when extra moisture is required or when a horse has difficulty chewing dry feed.
